More people than ever before are cutting animal products from their diets for a myriad of reasons including health, the environment and animal welfare. This article will explore the differences between vegan vs plant-based when it comes to diet and lifestyle. Veganism is defined as a way of living that attempts to exclude all forms of animal exploitation and cruelty from food, clothing, beauty, cleaning and lifestyle products and activities. A vegan diet therefore excludes any animal-derived foods, such as dairy, eggs, meat, fish, poultry and honey. The main distinction to note between vegan and plant-based diets is that a vegan diet is not necessarily a healthy diet as many processed and unhealthy foods can be suitable for a vegan diet. Plant-based diets focus purely on the health benefits of avoiding animal products in your diet rather than the ethical and moral aspects, which are the driving force behind vegan diets. A whole food plant-based diet is defined as one that eliminates or minimises all animal ingredients and highly refined foods and oils and focuses instead on natural, minimally processed plant foods. A WFPB diet consists of fruits, vegetables, tubers, whole grains and legumes, whilst foods such as tofu, plant-milks, nut, seeds and breads are limited as one of the key benefits of a WFPB is weight loss and management. Scientific evidence increasingly shows the power of a whole foods plant-based diet to control, reduce and even reverse many chronic diseases, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and premature death.

You may remember that I wrote an article a few weeks back sharing my reasons for eating a whole-food plant based diet. Just to recap, my diet consists primarily of whole, plant foods. Fresh fruits and veg, organic if possible; with some wholegrains, legumes, nuts and seeds thrown in as well. For the most part, I stay away processed foods. As I mentioned previously, I began experimenting with this way of eating in order to be healthier, and to become a better athlete. Nothing at all that comes from an animal. Any lifestyle and dietary choice that eliminates suffering and significantly reduces our impact on the planet is a big step in the right direction. I have no beef with anyone who is in it just for the ethical and environmental reasons. French fries, oils, fake meats, oreos, fizzy drinks — these are all vegan friendly foods.
